On Thursday 5 March 2026, the Obedience Main Ring at the NEC will once again host one of the most exciting and uplifting displays in the dog sport calendar – the Obreedience Display Competition.

If you love teamwork, precision training, breed diversity and the electric atmosphere of Crufts, this is an event you will not want to miss.

What Is Obreedience?

Obreedience is a team-based dog sport that blends structured obedience with collaboration and ring craft. Four handlers and their dogs compete together, combining a synchronised heelwork round with individual set exercises and a scent test.

The format is engaging to watch and technically demanding to perform. It highlights not only the skill of each partnership, but also the unity of the team as a whole.

The Crufts competition will include:

Heelwork Round – All four team members enter the ring together. The judge selects one of three approved patterns (Test A, B or C), featuring group line and single file work, turns, halts in unison, weave sections and pole work. All dogs are on lead for this round, and timing between handlers is critical.

Three Set Exercises – Each team member performs one of the following:

o Send to Bed

o Stop the Dog and Play

o Retrieve (handler’s article)

Scent Exercise – After each team has completed their main round, one dog from each team will carry out the scent exercise, identifying the correct article from a line of five.

The structure means every team member plays a vital role, and every performance can influence the final outcome.

A Showcase of Breed Versatility

One of the most compelling reasons to watch Obreedience at Crufts is the sheer variety of breeds taking part.

This year’s line-up includes teams representing:

  • Staffordshire Bull Terriers (Two Teams)

  • Manchester Terriers

  • Cocker Spaniels

  • Labradors

  • Jack Russell Terriers

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

  • Rough Collies

  • Miniature Long Haired Dachshunds

  • Springer Spaniels

…and more

Obreedience demonstrates something powerful: with positive training, clarity and consistency, dogs of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds can excel in structured obedience work.

Whether you are a long-time obedience competitor or simply curious about what your own breed might be capable of, this display will challenge assumptions and inspire new ideas.

Why You Should Come and Watch

Crufts provides a unique stage. The green carpet, the large audience and the atmosphere of the Obedience Main Ring create a setting unlike any other.

For spectators, Obreedience offers:

• Clear, easy-to-follow exercises

• Exciting teamwork in the heelwork round

• Impressive individual performances

• The tension and focus of the scent test

• A genuine sense of camaraderie between teams

You will see young dogs stepping into the spotlight for the first time, seasoned competitors returning to the ring, and handlers who have travelled across the country to train together despite living miles apart.

You will also see the result of months – often years – of preparation.

A Sport Built on Community

Obreedience has grown rapidly because it brings people together.

Many teams train separately for much of the year, meeting at heats across the country before qualifying for Crufts. The final is not just about competition; it is a celebration of the friendships, dedication and commitment that underpin the sport.

If you are considering getting involved in Obreedience yourself, watching the Crufts display is the perfect introduction. Seeing the exercises performed at this level will give you a clear understanding of what the sport involves and what can be achieved with consistent training.
