Welcome to Obreedience

Teamwork. Training. True Partnership.

Obreedience is a dynamic and inclusive team dog sport that celebrates the very best of obedience training across all breeds. Combining precision heelwork with individual set exercises and scent work, Obreedience showcases the harmony between handler and dog in a unique team format that is both exciting to compete in and compelling to watch.

Unlike traditional individual obedience competitions, Obreedience brings four dog-and-handler partnerships together to perform as one cohesive unit. The result is a sport that rewards consistency, communication, and collaboration – not just between dog and handler, but between teammates as well.

Whether you are an experienced obedience competitor, a rally enthusiast, an agility handler looking for a new challenge, or simply passionate about training your dog to a high standard, Obreedience offers something truly special.

What Is Obreedience?

An Obreedience competition consists of:

  • Heelwork Round – All four team members enter the ring together to perform a set heelwork pattern, chosen by the judge from three possible tests. Handlers work in both group line (side by side) and single file, completing turns, halts in unison, and technical elements such as weaves and poles. All dogs are on lead for this section.

  • Three Set Exercises – Each team member is allocated one individual exercise:

    • Send to Bed

    • Stop the Dog and Play

    • Retrieve (handler’s article)

  • Scent Exercise – Completed after all teams have finished their main round. Five articles are placed in a straight line, and the dog must correctly identify the handler’s article as determined by the judge.

The structure ensures that every team member plays a vital role. Success depends not only on individual performance but on overall teamwork, timing, control, and ring craft.

A Sport for Every Breed

One of the most exciting aspects of Obreedience is its breed diversity. From gundogs and pastoral breeds to terriers, toys, hounds and utility dogs, Obreedience demonstrates that with positive training, clarity and consistency, every breed can shine.

Teams often represent specific breeds, proudly promoting versatility and trainability. Others are mixed-breed or all-breed teams united by friendship and a shared love of training.

Obreedience has become a powerful platform for:

  • Showcasing lesser-seen breeds in obedience work

  • Encouraging new handlers into the sport

  • Promoting positive reinforcement and responsible training

  • Building supportive communities across the UK

The Spirit of the Sport

Obreedience is competitive – but it is also known for its camaraderie.

Teams frequently train across counties and regions, meeting at heats throughout the year. Many competitors take part in multiple disciplines including Rally, Agility, Heelwork to Music and traditional Obedience, bringing a wealth of experience and creativity into the ring.

At its heart, Obreedience is about:

  • Partnership

  • Precision

  • Presentation

  • Pride in your breed

  • And above all… enjoyment

Crufts – The Obreedience Showcase

Each year, top teams qualify to perform in the Obreedience Display Competition at Crufts in the Obedience Main Ring. Standing together on the famous green carpet is a highlight for competitors and a celebration of everything the sport represents: dedication, teamwork, and the joy of working dogs.

The Crufts final demonstrates just how far the sport has come, while inspiring the next generation of teams to step forward and join.
